How should I? I read the script and then I interpret it my own way, but how DO I "direct the play" ? On what basis should I set the time and location?

If you are a director then you know the answer to this question.
If you don't, maybe you should stick with second unit stuff for a while.
You read the play, how do YOU see it on the stage? That is how you direct.
