Can a cpu be too small for a motherboard? ?

I have a evga x58 sli 3 and I have a Intel core i7 processor that says it is a lga1155. This is my first time doing this but the guy at the place that I got these at was helping. I'm trying to put this on but the CPU is definitely smaller then the space given. Is it not okay to put on?

You have an Bloomfield/Gulftown motherboard and a Sandy Bridge CPU, and you're wondering why it's not fitting....

The CPU physically will not fit the motherboard, you need to either get the correct motherboard for the CPU or get the proper CPU for the motherboard. I would be probably be best to get a correct P67 or Z68 based LGA 155 motherboard.

They physically won't fit man. Your Motherboard is Superb! Get a Intel core i7-900 series CPU to match it. Or, get a P67/H67/Z68 based board and use the 1155 processor. (whatever it is 2600/2500)

Not once did it ever cross your mind to see what kind of CPUs are compatible with your motherboard

ummm... pretty sure that x58 is 1366. You need an 1155 board.
