Can a cpu be too small for a motherboard? ?

I have a evga x58 sli 3 and I have a Intel core i7 processor that says it is a lga1155. This is my first time doing this but the guy at the place that I got these at was helping. I'm trying to put this on but the CPU is definitely smaller then the space given. Is it not okay to put on?

Update:

Aaron do you read? I stated the guy was helping me. I was having him help me because I didn't wish for this to happen because I know it can. I did that so THIS issue could be avoided.

    Wrong motherboard/cpu combo

x58 motherboard only supports LGA 1366

LGA 1155 cpu only works with an H67, P67, Z68 motherboard

    its the wrong socket

see as its said the x58 series motherboard is for the socket 1366 cpu (1366 pins on the cpu, or so they say i guess its on both cpu and motherboard they count then either way)

you have a socket 1366 motherboard and a socket 1155 cpu meaning it wont fit

what you want is the intel core i7 9xx series (like 920, 930, 950, 980x and so on) the lga1155 socket cpu's wont fit another socket then 1155.

as you can see on thier webpage

You obviously haven't the slightest f***ing clue what you're doing. The fact you picked out an entirely incompatible CPU and motherboard speaks for itself. Gee, did you buy DDR2 for the X58 board too? Wouldn't doubt it. Instead of being an illiterate noob attempting to build a computer, why don't you go f***ing learn how to build first. That way you wouldn't be such an illiterate noob in the first place, buying wrong parts, and on here trying to troubleshoot the blatantly obvious. TIP: Both processor and motherboard have to be the SAME socket type to work. Had you actually read up on how to build a computer, you would obviously know this.

LGA 1155 and LGA 1366 have differing numbers of pins -- obviously you have a newer generation Core i7 that is based on the 1155 pin socket.

You need a LGA 1155 motherboard, not the 1366 version.
