Colt 1911 to 2011 - 100 Years of a Legendary Pistol?

Question

Ok, so I can't help asking a question without giving some opinions here.

I no longer subscribe to any of the old "gun rags" like Guns & Ammo and Outdoor Life and all that other stuff.  This is because they are usually 80 pages long with 60 pages of advertisements and about 15 pages of editorial content where the gunwriters always give glowing reviews of the crap that the gun companies send them (most likely to keep, so it's a bribe).

I do still get the American Rifleman, which comes as part of my membership in the NRA.

Ok.  So what did I miss?  Have I been living under a rock or something?  This WAS 2011.  Right?  This would mark the 100 year anniversary of the model 1911 that the US military used for decades.

So, where are the commemorative pistols?  I don't recall seeing a single one.  If I was in charge of marketing at Colt, you better believe I would have turned-out some products as a 100 year anniversary issue.

I dunno.  Maybe the Franklin Mint did one.  But this should have been a really big deal.

You had 1911's by Remington,Ruger, Sig Sauer & A .22lr model from Browning. Yes, colt did a commemorative.

I have actually seen some advertised.  I think Browning makes a 1911 commemorative and so does Taurus and Kimber.

But personally, I wouldn't own any of them.  I used to collect a few of the old Winchester Commemorative rifles.  But when I finally thought about the guns, I realized that they were (1) mass produced to the point where they would never really be collectable, and (2) looked like something that ought to be hung on the wall of some Walt Disney theme park ride - garish!

Oh yeah, and while I am at it.  Would you care to buy any of the Statue of Liberty Commemorative knives that I own?  New in the box!

Stay away from commemorative firearms.  They are nothing but dust collectors.

I know Colt put out a 100 Year Anniversary 1911 Series 80 .45-cal pistol. There's a guy in my gun club that bought one. I don't know if any others did.

There were plenty of commemorative pistols, check gunbroker.  I believe Utah also named the 1911 as their state gun, or maybe it was Arizona.  G&A writes about 7 articles per magazine about some sort of 1911, and they had plenty to say this year.  Your comment about reading AR and then saying that G&A is on someones payroll is extremely ironic, the NRA bought front to back, right to left.  They've never said a bad word about any gun they get their hands on.  G&A calls crap crap.
