How to read CNBC morning stock ticker?

I was watching the business news on CNBC, and noticed that the ticker would say something like "Exxon down - 100@$79.00".

What does the "100" mean?

That ticker you are referring to is showing real-time trades. Those are normally shown after-market. So that is 100 shares at $79.00 per share.

I believe that is the price of the stock over in european trade not US. Pre-Market CNBC usually gives some ticker information of US stocks that trade in other markets.

100 shares traded at $79

First off, Durga, Exxon is not an index. Exxon is a stock in the oil industry, and it trades in dollars, not points, like an index.

Here is a good explanation of the CNBC stock ticker tape along the bottom of your TV screen.
