Having a TON of anxiety about labor!?

My doctor says that my little girl should be here in about a week! :D I'm so excited, but at the same time, I'm freaking out. I literally shake and start sweating when I think about it. I'm worried that something will go wrong, I'll start freaking out from the pain and yell at people, that I'll pass out or throw up or something, just that kind of stuff.. Can some of you nice ladies give me any advice or tell me stories or anything to calm me down? :/

The best thing to do is take it in stride and be honest with yourself. Ask yourself if this really hurts as bad as you're worried it 'might'. TV lies, labour is NOT that terrifying and painful. If you can approach the situation in a calm "I can do this" manner you will be less tense and your muscles will relax making the process progress quicker and with less pain.

I was nervous with my first but somehow I managed to find that mental calm zone. I was asked if I wanted drugs but wasn't in a lot of pain so I said no. In my mind I wasn't taking anything I didn't need. Little did I know that the epidural actually slows down the process, dragging it out. I'd rather have a lot of pain for less time than be in a little less pain for a lot longer. I had my first baby without drugs.

With my second baby I was feeling very strong contractions but I already knew I could do it so I breathed through the pain and in no time at all I had my second baby without drugs.

Believe in yourself, take it as it comes, keep calm and you'll do just fine. Half the pain of labour is women psyching themselves up with fear about what potential pain it is.

Once you are in labor it is happening and there is no going back. It doesn't matter how prepared or unprepared you are, the baby is going to come out.

If you want to scream the whole time, scream. Vomit on people, pee on people, its FINE. Tons of pregnant women vomit during labor. Tons poop on the table. Some confuse urine and water. Make a huge mess, scream, its fine. The nurses will clean it all up with a smile.

There is nothing to worry about. If you are worried about the baby's well being stay attached to the monitor the whole time. As soon as your water has broken have a monitor attached to your baby's head. If monitoring makes you feel more confident then do it. If no monitoring makes you more comfy insist on taking them off. It is all about you and your comfort.

You will get through it, you will be fine, and no matter how bad the pain is and what fluids come shooting out of you in the end you get to hold your sweet baby.

Just a heads up,you may not want them to give you a drug called Versed for twilight sedation

In fact, many people who use Versed for "conscious sedation" during a procedure are awake for the entire procedure but remember nothing, often believing they were "out" the whole time.

Versed (Midazolam) is an amnestic. It is commonly administered in combination with anesthesia before and during surgery. It is also commonly used for minor procedures like colonoscopies dental procedures like extractions, conscience sedation so that patients won't remember pain and discomfort. However, that does not mean that those sensations will not be experienced.

Women have been giving birth for millenia. And yes, some of them probably passed out. (And then they woke up again.) Some threw up (and their attendant cleaned it up).

Childbirth isn't a social occassion -- etiquette has no rules outlining how you are supposed to behave .. and nobody will be shocked or disgusted by anything that happens.

And if the pain is more than YOU can tolerate ... there is pain relief available to you.
