What Pepper Spray is best? Sabre vs. OC17 Magnum?

Comparing Sabre and Police Magnum OC-17 on Amazon.

It appears that Sabre is a mixed Formula of pepper spray (no indication of the concentration), its tear gas, and uv dye. While from how I think I understand it is that the Police MAGNUM OC-17 has the highest concentration (allowed by law) of pepper. I think there's pros and cons to either formula. But which is overall better and why?

Tough call. The OC concentration in most sprays is pretty much as high as will be effective plus some, so equal OC will be pretty much the same. Tear gas is also a mix up, some guys who have been exposed to both say the OC is the worse of the two. The UV dye isn't a bad idea for later identification.

As far as OC goes, it has it's limitations. Cold weather it's not much worse than spraying someone with water. Once they get in the back of a warm squad they're in hell but until then it doesn't do much. One of our decontamination procedures is to put the person into a cool room with wind and water. Knocks a lot of time off how long it stays effective.

Six of one, half a dozen of the other. Barring different concentrations of Oleoresin Capsicum, two pepper sprays are going to be comparable.

I would never rely on pepper spray for self-defense against an armed assailant, though. Not only is it inadequate to stop or deter some individuals (especially those who are on drugs), it does not provide for a serious deterrent against armed individuals. Someone who is armed, pointing a gun at you, will likely start firing blindly (only a little pun intended) if sprayed with pepper spray. That would endanger not only you, but those around you.

If you choose to use OC spray, please use it wisely and have an alternate defense if possible. Better to start low and move up than to start low and end up dead because you could not defend yourself when the situation was escalated.

Well quite simply bear spray is way more potent. While both types of spray are made from oleoresin capsicum, it is the capsaicin and related capsaicinoids that are the active ingredients in bear spray. So if you see claims on a large can that state 10%, 20%, or 30% oleoresin capsicum, it is pepper spray (personal defense spray), not bear spray. The EPA has guidelines on bear spray. I have used bear spray on bears in Alaska although I carry a gun for those times the spray fails to stop a bear. I can tell you this stuff is far more powerful than personal spray. A can of bear spray went off in a bush plane here in Alaska, all aboard died. If sprayed at a humans face they could choke to death. Its not something you want to use on people unless they trying to kill you. The strange part about bear spray is it attracks bears. I have sprayed it on the ground near brown bears and they sniffed it then rolled in it. People have sprayed their tents thinking it would repel the bear only to came back and find their tents smashed flat. It only works if sprayed right in their face. I wouldn’t ever use bear spray on a person unless I had no other choice. The liabilities involved are bad news!
