You must be thinking of intramolecular dehydration (CH3CH2OH ---> CH2=CH2 + H2O) and intermolecular dehydration (2 CH3CH2OH ---> CH3CH2-O-CH2CH3 + H2O)
Since you cannot make a 1 carbon alkene, methanol can only undergo the latter reaction.

CH3CH2OH + H2SO4 (dehydrator) --> H2C=CH2 + H2O
There is no such chemical called methene, because you have only one carbon to start with. so it is impossible to get a double bond.
