How should you put out a FIREPLACE fire if it's a bit of an emergency?
Say two people are enjoying a roaring fire in the fireplace, but one person becomes ill, and the other person is going to take them to hospital. How can you safely put out the fire?

keep a bucket of sand nearby..... that will smother the flames and cool the embers.... then, shut any doors or be sure the screen is secure in front of the opening..... leave the draft open!!!..... you can shut it when you come back home..... this is also the best thing to have handy if you'd get a chimney fire.... smother the fire, and get out of the house!!..... call 911 from outside.....
Do NOT throw water on it!!!! All you'll have is a mess to clean up. Just separate the logs that have not yet burned from one another and put them off to the sides. Let the embers go out by themselves. Be certain the doors are closed or the mesh screen is in front of it.
Why would you have to put it out? Just don't put anymore wood on it. I am assuming you have a wire grate or a tempered glass front on it. It will go out all by itself.
