You need to take the fire's oxygen away. Use dirt or sand to smother the flames. Every few minutes, Keep mixing the dirt with the ashes to smother hot embers.

My parents had the habit of not putting wood on the fire as their bedtime approached. They would "bank" the fire at bedtime, which consisted of scooping ashes in the fireplace over the wood/coals. This would damper the fire/flames, then they'd put their fire screen in front of the fireplace; most modern fireplaces have a built in wire mesh screen and glass doors, so use these to keep all contents of the fireplace inside the fireplace - keeping your house safe. You have to keep the damper open. Go to bed and rest safely.

If you don't have a fireplace screen, you really need to get one - soon. These are usually a seasonal item if you buy a free-standing one, or you can buy one that attaches to the fireplace and install it yourself or go to a fireplace store and have them install one for you.

Fire needs 3 things: Oxygen, fuel, and heat. Take away one and you kill the fire. Just put a little water on it. Don't drown it and spill it everywhere. Stop blowing on it, you're only keeping it going. Piss on it if you want a small controlled stream.

For the love of God do not use a Fire Extinguisher. That will ruin your carpet and will just create the biggest mess of your life.

If you are burniing solid fuel, then you can rake the fire out with a poker. Just keep running the poker in and out, and the cinders will fall out of the firebasket. Do not throw water on a solid fuel fire because it makes a mess with ash floating everywhere.

Huh! what an interesting question! First of all, I don't think you need to worry about putting out the fire before you go to bed. If you have a fire-screen, no embers are going to float into your room. I really wouldn't worry about it.

If you just insist on being paranoid about it, you could dunk water on it, as you suggest, but that would create a huge mess I suspect.

    Use the fire extinguisher

Pour buckets of sand over the fire

    turn off the gas switch

    DO NOT USE WATER.

your house isnt going to catch on fire and blowing and fanning it makes it worse so just let it be ..

Well.. if its a fire place where you have to throw wood in... then... it will slowly "turn" itself off as the wood will burn up..
