New TSA non-radiation scanners?

Recently going through security at SFO I was directed to pass through the scanner booth. I am a frequent flyer and try to avoid unnecessary radiation so I generally request a pat down instead. This time I was denied. They said the scanner didn't use radiation, but "body heat", and was completely safe. I've never heard of such a scanner and can find nothing on the I'net. Do they exist, and are they in use at SFO, or was I lied to?

Some use millimeter radio waves instead of low energy x-rays.

But - I have never heard of "body heat" being used in TSA scanners. Infrared images are rarely very detailed.

I think there were BSing you.
