Your Canon GL1 is miniDV tape based.

Connect the camcorder's DV port (not USB) to the Mac's firewire port (not USB). I don't understand exactly what you mean by "a IEEE firewire cable that connects to your laptop (MacBook Pro) USB drive." Either it is a real firewire cable or it is not. USB and firewire (also referred to as i.LINK, DV or IEEE1394) are very different protocols.

DV-to-USB cable-converter-adapter things do not work.

You did not tell us which MacBook Pro. ALL MacBook Pro laptops have a firewire port. It might be a 6-pin firewire port or it might be a 9-pin firewire port. The last 4-pin to 6 pin firewire cable I bought at Fry's Electronics was about $10. The last 4-pin to 9-pin firewire cable I bought there was about $15.

TURN THE CAMERA OFF.
Assuming the computer is on...
Plug the firewire cable into the camcorder's DV port and the computer's firewire port.
Turn the camcorder on - and put it in "Play" or VCR" mode. Rewind the tape if necessary.
Launch your video editor (iMovie is bundled with OSX; Final Cut is lots better). Assuming you have already set up the scratch file locations and other application options and defaults, under File, select Capture...
