Can you eat Edamame shells?

My mom was flipping through a magazine and she needed to know if you can eat edamame shells.

you can, it wont hurt you, its great insoluble fiber, and itll cleanse your colon. however, its not really very nutritious, and doesn't taste good. Edamame is just (usually steamed) soybeans in the shell, and if you steam them they pop right out of the shell into your mouth. you can just compost the shells.

I've had edamame a few times, and usually they are steamed and lightly salted, but only eat the seeds inside. I imagine you can eat the shells since they are just like pea pods, but maybe a little tougher. I've never eaten a shell though so I wouldn't know.
