you can, it wont hurt you, its great insoluble fiber, and itll cleanse your colon. however, its not really very nutritious, and doesn't taste good. Edamame is just (usually steamed) soybeans in the shell, and if you steam them they pop right out of the shell into your mouth. you can just compost the shells.

    How To Eat Edamame

I've had edamame a few times, and usually they are steamed and lightly salted, but only eat the seeds inside. I imagine you can eat the shells since they are just like pea pods, but maybe a little tougher. I've never eaten a shell though so I wouldn't know.

I was cooking at home and had not eaten this food a lot before and swallowed several pods. They felt furry and hard to eat. Then I got worried and looked online to see if it's dangerous. Glad it isn't, but I'm not gonna eat the pods again. I will eat the seed-y parts again. that was super tasty

They don't taste good and are REALLY hard to digest. Kinda like a bay leaf

Yes, my friend's grandmother (Japanese in Japan) eats them. Takes some chewing, and they are a bit fuzzy, but no prob.
