Effects of folic acid deficiency?

I just got of off birth control due to the side effects I was experiencing. One of them was chest pains and shortness of breath. I was experiencing this mainly during my workouts (while I'm running) and after my workouts. I was never able to catch my breath. I know I'm not out of shape because I've been running and playing soccer for years and didn't start having this issue until I started the pill back in June of 2011. I've read that being on the pill can cause folic acid deficiency. One of the side effects of that is shortness of breath. Does folic acid deficiency make cardio more difficult? Or could that just be because of the pill I was taking? I bought folic acid tablets (400mcg) tonight and am going to start taking them in a few days once the hormones from the pill are out of my body. I'm just wanting to know if the deficiency that I could potentially have causes breathing problems.

@JoysofToys I didn't even consider anemia. My mom is very anemic so that's a good possibility. Thanks for the advice. I'm getting off of the pill all together. I was on it to control my periods, but the hormones were messing EVERYTHING up. (obviously) I didn't feel safe taking them anymore so now I'm just trying to get back on track with my health and fitness.

short of breath due to lack of oxygen is due to anemia. Anemia can be due to lack of b12 or iron. Folic acid can mask b12 anemia. Often when you take folic acid you start feeling better but the issue has not been resolved. B12 causes nerve loss decay that can not be reversed even if you start taking b12 vitamins later.
I highly advise you to get your blood checked for anemia (b12 and iron).
contraceptive pill and vitamin c interfere with absorbtion of b12 and this is why if you are deficient in b12 its advised to try a different type of contraception.

If you use too much folic acid constantly you may start feeling weakness and get insomnia. A pregnant woman who uses much more folic acid than recommended may have premature delivery. There are few articles which state that too much folic acid supress some genes, like T53 which is responsible for "fighting" with cancerous process.
