I've played every Pokémon game since Red and Blue up until Emerald. I decided I want to come back, and I am wondering if I should get Pokémon Platinum or Pokémon SoulSilver. I am thinking Platinum so I can get introduced to the 4th Gen. Pokémon, but also SoulSilver to bring back Silver's memories.

You can get 4th gen pokes on Soul Silver. I'd say go with that one.

depends on which you really prefer. pokemon platinum is a great game and as you said will introduce you to the fourth generation; but if you like the old style in a new way get soulsilver. In Soulsilver there are also pokemon of the 4 gen, so I think it is the best of the two, and I also loved the way it had both kanto and jhoto maps together :)

I have both Platinum and Soulsilver. I personally like Heartgold & Soulsilver better, it's easier to obtain pokemon in the pokedex in Hg Ss. Also the Pokewalker (pokemon pedometer) is only available in heartgold and soulsilver which alows you to level up pokemon by walking. However, if you wan't to catch Giratina, Palkia, and Dialga get Platinum. It's a preference of Legendaries and exercise.
PS: If your looking for something really recent, I'd reserve the new PKMN Black and White Versions 2.

i say platinum, yes soul would bring back memories but after that you would be board after previous playthroughs plus platinum is a really fun game.
