Why are "Religious" people so eager to bad-mouth "Athiests"?

Saying "and vice versa" is still just bad-mouthing....

It's not just religious people.

People don't like to be told that they're wrong, regardless of what you believe. As humans, we have this interesting habit of folding beliefs into ourselves so much that it almost becomes a part of us. It melds with our cultural identity. To give you an example, I'm a Bulls fan. I will always love the Bulls, no matter what happens to them or what you say.

When you question the validity of certain beliefs held by people, it's like questioning the validity of them as a person. Typically, when you tell somebody they're wrong about something, you don't mean mean completely wrong across the board - but it can certainly feel that way for many people.

This leads to cognitive dissonance, and that leads to... everything you describe.

@Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: Please understand the atheist position. We mean no offense at all, but we believe in your God as much as we do Santa Claus. Literally. There is no evidence to suggest that Santa Claus exists, and there is no evidence to suggest God exists. In terms of evidence, they are equal. It seems ridiculous, so it can't be helped that mockery will follow. Don't take it so hard.

Honestly, I think it`s because religion can`t argue with logical thought. An atheist has logic and evidence behind what they think, and that threatens religion, because there is no logic or evidence in religion. I honestly think that if people survive and have education for another few centuries, religion will be one of those ridiculous superstitions that we look back on and laugh at.
I`ll admit that Atheists get angry too. As an Atheist, I can explain this. It`s frustrating that there are laws and people`s expectations (for example, gay couples can`t get married) that we know are based on nothing but silly superstitions. It`s upsetting to see children who are being brainwashed into religion, but you can`t show them other thoughts and possibilities that are out there because then their religious parents would hate you. It`s hard to deal with people who are being stupid and ignorant, but are still controlling a lot of aspects of life around the world.

Its all about some sort of ego boost. When you say religious I'll assume you mean christians. A real christian would not judge another for there beliefs but agree to disagree.

Some people badmouth others to feel better about themselves and to giggle at their own wittiness. Happens all the time, and everyone does it at some point. Asking why only turns the wheel back one rotation.

Most "religious" people here are just extremist and not typical of progressive Christians, Muslims etc...

This is basically a troll forum where people come in their spare time to vent (i.e. during breaks at work........)
