Learning Spanish in America?

I've been enrolled in Spanish classes for five years now (senior in high school) and I really really would love to be bilingual (Spanish/English) but recently I visited Mexico on a cruise and found my Spanish very limited despite all the studying and application I've done. I would love to learn and I'm searching for possible studying abroad and more exposure by watching movies and reading as much as I can in Spanish. I've also tried to find someone who speaks it to practice with, but it seems that no one's willing to teach me (mostly the, just talk in English, no point in speaking Spanish when you're in America line) and speak with me. There isn't a large Spanish or Latino population where I live, but I really want to learn despite the adversity I had in trying to communicate in Mexico and in my other experience. I understand people are likely to make fun of me and call me stupid even though Spanish isn't my native language, but I want to learn nevertheless, I don't care as long as I can get better. Any advice or things I could try that'd help me?

You have to immerse yourself in an environment where your english becomes useless and spanish is your primary tool of communication. You'll be thinking in Spanish within a month.

Hispanics are welcoming of people trying to learn Spanish and will not call you stupid. You can try listening to music in spanish and hispanic radios. Pandora and iheart radio are good sources if you have access to apps. Watching children shows is the best way to increase your basic vocabulary and understanding of the language. Try "Pocoyo" in youtube. Books and audio books will help you as well you can buy those online as well. Audiobooks.com has a good selection. Don't worry if you don't get it at first, it takes a while, just keep trying!
