I just ordered a Wilson 47D magazine for my Colt Series 80 because I'm having problems with the factory mags. They just don't feed properly at all, and they consistently cause jams, which pisses me off. I guess you spend a grand on a gun just to have to rebuild the damn thing...
Anyway, now I'm reading that the 47Ds don't work so well with the Series 80. So what do I do? What magazine is the best for this model gun? It's the lightweight version (aluminum body) if that helps.

Not a magazine problem--a 1911 problem. So, yes, you now have to do all the work on the "gun" itself to make it work properly. You can do it yourself, but the least aggravating way is to send it to someone who specializes in 1911s, with your magazines, and a detailed description of exactly what it does or doesn't do. Include the kind of ammunition you're using and/or want to use too. Never seen one that couldn't be made to work, some just take longer and cost more to fine tune.
Here is the best magazine I have found so far, They are like the Mec-Gar, but still have a metal follower, not plastic. They are identical to the factory mags that came with my 1911PD, which is also a lightweight frame gun. http://www.legacysports.com/products/cit_mags.html (hit the 1911 tab)
That's odd. I've always had the best luck with the factory mags. My series 70 works best with them. Out of curiosity what are you shooting in your 1911? Older 1911's worked best with hardball ammo. But your Series 80 should have the newer throat with the mod in it to help it chamber hollow points and truncated cone rounds. Sometimes it helps to polish the feed ramp if it has heavy tooling marks on it. I have friends that swear by Mec Gar mags but I haven't tried one in my 1911. I do use them in my Browning High Power though and they work fine. http://www.mec-gar.com/Magazines/1911 Also you may want to read this http://www.sightm1911.com/lib/tech/reliability_secrets.htm
I never had problems with the Wilson Combat #47D and my Series 80 Colt. Try them and you will see one way or the other. Wilson Combat magazines are among the best M1911 magazines made, it it likely you will be satisfied.
