Was Mitt Romney's grandfather a polygamist?

I read that Mitt Romney's father was born in Mexico, and that his grandparents were Americans who lived in Mexico. I know there was a group of polygamists who left Utah for Mexico when the regular Mormon church banned polygamy (maybe another group went to Canada?), but I don't know whether his grandparents were part of that group. I'm not looking for Romney bashers, by the way, but would like to understand his roots a little better. Any factual info would be appreciated.

There was a group that went to mexico to escape religious persecution from the US government. This was before the church ban on polygamy in the 1800s. Ironically many in that group were veterans of the Mexican American war. Many Romney bashers have said that his great grandfather hated America. The truth is much more complicated. That generation was driven out of their homes in Illinois while the US government did nothing. Many of them left their family on the planes and marched to war for that same government. And then when they were finally settled in Utah they had to leave again because of persecution and the very next generation came back from Mexico. I don't know of any Vietnam veterans with such a complex relationship with their government.

For the record Obama's father was a polygamist. So if polygamy is a voting issue for you your going to have to find it in your heart to get over it or vote third party.

No, Mitt Romney's paternal grandfather was not a polygamist. Gaskell Romney had only one wife, Anna Amelia Pratt, married in 1895 when Gaskell was 24 years old.

It is true that Mitt Romney's father was born in Mexico to parents who were American citizens. It is also true that Mitt's great grandfather practiced polygamy. The great grandparents were part of the group who left the United States to pratice polygamy in peace, but Gaskell was born in St. George Utah in 1871 before the family went to Mexico. Mitt's father was born in Mexico and did not practice polygamy. Not that there is anything wrong with polygamy; I'm just giving you the facts. The great grandparents didn't leave the United States because the Church stopped new marriages for polygamy in the United States (the "ban" you are talking about), because the Church was fine with existing polygamous marriages. They left because of Federal persecution. The source I have is about Mitt's father, George Wilcken Romney.

Mitt Romney is 6th technology LDS, or to apply their nickname Mormon. That takes his kinfolk tree previously into the era of plural marriage. Mitt, is related to Marion G Romney who rose to be President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of the Mormon church. Marion G Romney became into born in Mexico to oldsters who had fled from the united states of a to dodge being prosecuted below the regulations which prohibited the Mormons from guidance Plural Marriage or Polygamy. Marion G Romney is the son of George S Romney, and a cousin of Michigan State Governor, George W Romney father of Mitt. This places Mitt's early roots in polygamy, yet no count if his Grandfather became right into a Polygamist or no longer, i'm no longer able to declare. The evidence and knowledge for those connections comes immediately from the Mormon church itself. Mormons have confidence in collating as plenty kinfolk history as is available, it rather is saved in diverse LDS kinfolk history libraries for the period of the worldwide. If everybody desires to look up the Romney lineage, you in simple terms accomplish that.this could be the place the Media have been given the tips. could you adult men interior the united states of a prefer to choose for him, i'm no longer able to work out him doing a worse activity than a number of the others.

Yes, he was. Why do you think he went to Mexico? He was an active member in the Mormon cult and at the time polygamy was acceptable but not under US law. hence he went to Mexico as it was convenient.

Like Mitt going to France to avoid Vietnam.
