Okay sturdy as a S&W 686 no it's not and I'll tell you why. Colt Python's were assembled by hand with many of the parts hand fitted this is why they have such smooth and buttery actions. The timing between hammer, trigger and cylinder are made to extremely tight tolerances making them less resistant to abuse. The Smith's have less precise actions and timing making them a little more tolerant to abuse. The Python is the Ferrari the S&W is the truck both good for what they are but in two totally different categories. You have to have the Ferrari tuned regularly while the truck can go forever on just an oil change. Colt Python's are beautiful works of art and well worth the money in my opinion. For bouncing down a dirt road I'd rather the Smith.

Yeah they're probably one of the best double-action revolvers ever made if you ask me. The only other one I have ever fired that I liked as much was the Dan Wessons.
BUT, they're not made anymore, so there's no point in getting a Python unless you want it as something to look at in a display case or to sit around and gain more value.
The 686 is a good gun. I like the trigger. Smith & Wesson is still a pretty expensive revolver and if you want my two cents, Ruger is the best DA revolver for the money.

Yes, a Colt Python will last a life time. I own both Colts and S&Ws there are no finer revolvers made. An of the two the Colt would come out on top by a slim margin

The Colt Python is one of the best out of the box .357s. Best factory trigger pull, beautiful bluing, great fit and finish. Is it as strong as a S&W 686? Maybe. Is it as tough as a Ruger? No. The Python was not made for super hot loads. It's designed to be one of the best shooting .357s made. It depends on what you want.

I'm not sure about your ammo question,I live in Pa.About the Colt Python it is no longer made and it is called the Cadaliac of revolvers,I have always wanted one, they are expensive because they are no longer made and it has become a collecters item. They are not too hard to find but they are more expensive than other revolvers.
