What would happen if you use regular laundry detergent instead of H E detergent in the washing machine?

We had just bought a huge thing of regular liquid laundry detergent when our washing machine bit the dust, smoking up the whole house. Our new one says we are only to use the H E detergents. Would the regular do anything negative to the new washing machine? I was thinking I would not use as much of the old. I have not done it, just don't want to waste the old. I can give it away, just am curious as to the exact difference between them and what it would do if you didn't use H E.

Thank you for your kind wisdom.

Regular soap is way to sudsy. if you can't take it back, trade with a friend, say they need detergent give them yours and have them buy you the HE you need.

Well, you risk damaging your machine and voiding your warranty, but for the most part you will have a very bubbly mess. HE detergent has a much lower surfactant content therefore it bubbles up less. I have heard of ppl using very little reg detergent but watering it down first, but I would not recommend this. You may have better luck washing w/out detergent. If you do use it, use VERY little, like 5-10 percent of what you normally would. If you use too much, you will be knee-deep in bubble land, which may sound like fun but I assure you it gets old quick. Good luck.
