i always wondered about that. of course, we remember it fondly in retrospect, but at the time we must have seemed like basically terrorists. forming militias, vandalizing merchant ships, and attacking soldiers ... i mean, what else would you call that? it makes sense that most well-off colonists opposed open rebellion.

It was closer to a third, but it's also pretty much common knowledge that the actual force behind the revolution was so a group of extremely wealthy smugglers could escape being taxed for the goods they smuggled into the country.
