The Enginer drinks the fluid that breaks down his molecular structure, so he's basically commiting suicide. Except he falls into the waterfall, and the DNA recombines and accelerates evolution on this unknown planet. He's creating life.

I think it is mean to be the starting of the life on earth. That means life on earth started from the death of alien and his D.N.A has contributed in it. This is just my take.
