my cousin owns a 2009 Ducati 1198. he says he paid $27,000 for it after tax and i think that is extremely high! he got liability and all that for it but still its alot. he bought it 3 years ago and hardly broke it in yet, only has about 3900 miles on it. what are the pros and cons of owning one of those? is it worth it?

He wants it. He obviously enjoys it -- 1300 miles a year is more than most motorcycles do. The "pros" and "cons" don't matter. It doesn't matter if he is a pitiful rider and a Duc is a waste. It doesn't matter if it costs more for maintenance.
Ride your own Ride. His rides his Duc -- it is worth it *for him.* I you don't think it is worth it, then don't buy the Doc -- get your own bike, Ride your own Ride.
Only the owner can decide if it's the right bike for him or her. The advantages are really high top speed, good road manners, and extreme manueverability. The disadvantages are they are probably not that comfortable, especially for long trips. If that's the the rate your cousin is driving his Ducati (1300 miles a year, barely 110 miles per month), then he is not current on the bike and is a danger to himself and others. He is not keeping up his experience level and currency of experience to be able to handle such a motorcycle in any extreme situation. Basically, every time he gets on it, will be just like the first time he ever rode it, as he is not gaining experience often enough to make him a competent rider. (Unless he rides a different bike more regularly) He needs to either ride more often or get rid of the bike. The price is probably realistic. They run between $22,000 and $32,000 before taxes and licensing. For the price he paid, he could have got a Harley, which would have been a lot more fun on long trips, or a couple of V-Stars, or 6 Royal-Enfields, etc. P. S. Parts will be VERY expensive for this bike, also.

Unless he races the Ducati it is NOT worth it. Why? $27k for a sport bike is ridiculous! You can buy a Hayabusa, ZX-14, 1000RR or any other comparable bike for approximately $15000-$17000 OTD. Ducati's are known to have higher breakdown rates, higher cost of ownership and are the most horribly uncomfortable motorcycles made. I never understood why Ducati always used the crappiest seat on such an expensive bike. Go sit on any of the bikes I mentioned and then the Ducati and you will see exactly what I mean.
Anyone who answers your question by saying "only you can decide if it is worth it" is a complete moron. They obviously have no rationale and ability to compare price vs performance. You usually get answers like that from people who own Harleys, cause they are use to routinely getting ripped off, or people who are simply douchebags.
EDIT.... If someone was going to sell you a brand new 2012 Corvette convertible for $10k, would it be worth it? What if someone tried to sell you the exact same car for $150k?? Exactly.... I guess a few people on these boards dont have the brains to use logic.
