is a Ducati 1199 really worth it?

my cousin owns a 2009 Ducati 1198. he says he paid $27,000 for it after tax and i think that is extremely high! he got liability and all that for it but still its alot. he bought it 3 years ago and hardly broke it in yet, only has about 3900 miles on it. what are the pros and cons of owning one of those? is it worth it?

Worth? Do you actually know what the word means?

    http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/worth?sh...

2: the value of something measured by its qualities or by the esteem in which it is held

He wants it. He obviously enjoys it -- 1300 miles a year is more than most motorcycles do. The "pros" and "cons" don't matter. It doesn't matter if he is a pitiful rider and a Duc is a waste. It doesn't matter if it costs more for maintenance.

Ride your own Ride. His rides his Duc -- it is worth it *for him.* I you don't think it is worth it, then don't buy the Doc -- get your own bike, Ride your own Ride.

Only the owner can decide if it's the right bike for him or her.

The advantages are really high top speed, good road manners, and extreme manueverability.

The disadvantages are they are probably not that comfortable, especially for long trips.

If that's the the rate your cousin is driving his Ducati (1300 miles a year, barely 110 miles per month), then he is not current on the bike and is a danger to himself and others. He is not keeping up his experience level and currency of experience to be able to handle such a motorcycle in any extreme situation. Basically, every time he gets on it, will be just like the first time he ever rode it, as he is not gaining experience often enough to make him a competent rider. (Unless he rides a different bike more regularly) He needs to either ride more often or get rid of the bike.

The price is probably realistic. They run between $22,000 and $32,000 before taxes and licensing. For the price he paid, he could have got a Harley, which would have been a lot more fun on long trips, or a couple of V-Stars, or 6 Royal-Enfields, etc.

    P. S. Parts will be VERY expensive for this bike, also.

the capacity transport on a v-twin is amazingly different; the bigger engine pulses produce extra torque and thereby horsepower lots until now in the RPM variety, and fairly some human beings discover the broader and until now powerband to be much less complicated to apply. worry is, the the Superquadro engine in the Panigale is a sparkling evolution of v-twin that makes extra of that is horespower up suitable - so capacity transport is actual fairly peaky, making it like no v-twin in the past it. mutually as fairly some human beings like the powerband on v-twins, they nonetheless choose the smoother, greater rpm feeling of an inline 4, so which you fairly won't understand until you experience one. Ducatis are very unique motorcycles that are maximum suitable ridden via people who get exhilaration from the "character" and experience featuring using a Ducati - and in case you are not getting that then i think of there is an exceptionally good threat you're dropping your money. even however the Panigale represents extra "bang on your greenback" than something Ducati has made in the final 10 years, and an arguement could be made that that is very well worth the extra money, the eastern vast 4 will stretch your greenback extra each and every time. you purchase a Ducati for that is look (good lord the Panigale is stunning) and experience, and because using the motorbike is a different style of motorbike journey. Ducatis are for 2 kinds of riders: purists and posers. in case you're strictly attracted to overall performance fee, you in basic terms would be unable to beat the eastern, all issues seen for the money there extremely is not any assessment.

Yeah! I was almost seduced by the Ducati red once, but it just wouldn't fit and the snob effect just wasn't worth the money.

They look GOOD! That seat that just bites into your thigh begging you to pull the bike over in a curve also goes with a seat that feels like a rough cut 2 x 6 and just feels tolerable for what? 20 miles.

Source(s): I resisted...sniff! That bike is built for the race and nothing else! If your not racing it ...it's not going to fit!

Unless he races the Ducati it is NOT worth it. Why? $27k for a sport bike is ridiculous! You can buy a Hayabusa, ZX-14, 1000RR or any other comparable bike for approximately $15000-$17000 OTD. Ducati's are known to have higher breakdown rates, higher cost of ownership and are the most horribly uncomfortable motorcycles made. I never understood why Ducati always used the crappiest seat on such an expensive bike. Go sit on any of the bikes I mentioned and then the Ducati and you will see exactly what I mean.

Anyone who answers your question by saying "only you can decide if it is worth it" is a complete moron. They obviously have no rationale and ability to compare price vs performance. You usually get answers like that from people who own Harleys, cause they are use to routinely getting ripped off, or people who are simply douchebags.

EDIT.... If someone was going to sell you a brand new 2012 Corvette convertible for $10k, would it be worth it? What if someone tried to sell you the exact same car for $150k?? Exactly.... I guess a few people on these boards dont have the brains to use logic.

    As I said...

A japanese sport bike will be as good in many ways but for some there is an appeal to european exotics that cannot be denied. To make the comparison to cars,as Paul implied a corvette is relatively affordable.Easy to find parts for and fix.But some people will always have a weakness for a Maserati!

Not unless youre serious in the track game because anything else would just be a waste. Theres thousands of other bikes that will suit street riding better than one of ducatis top performers.

The Ducati is a really good bike, but I would get a Kawasaki ninja. They make different levels of this bike ranging in speed.
