What can I do about my Kalashnikov's (MAK-90) accuracy problem?

I've had this AK for a while now. Originally bought it just to spite Bill Clinton and his friends when they passed their "assault weapons" ban. Well today I finally decided to end its safe queen status and shoot it for the first time. Damn was I disappointed. As we all know from the many questions posted here, an AK can rarely hit the broad side of a barn even when you're standing inside one but this stupid rifle could nail 2 liter soda bottles dead center every stinkin' time (at about 50 yards). I didn't look for a longer range to shoot on because, well, it's an AK right?

So my question is, what can I do to get optimal AK inaccuracy from this gun? Maybe add some kind of tactical rail and really cheap optical sight and leave all the screws loose? Somebody help me out.

As a matter of fact I WAS shooting steel cased, steel cored ammo that came wrapped up in brown paper that was tied up with twine. This brings up another point. I bought the ammo in Anchorage, AK sometime in the 1990s. Shouldn't it have blown the gun up or misfired or SOMETHING? It went bang every time. Shocking.

Oh, and I actually DID drift the front sight with a ball peen hammer but not to worry. I'm a professional mechanic. Promise.

J and Jeff, you missed the point. My complaint is that the rifle is unacceptably ACCURATE for an AK. It hit EVERYTHING it was aimed at. Go back and read a couple day's worth of Hunting questions and you'll get it.

The first thing you need to do is hold it at waist level and bump fire it until the barrel glows red. This is considered "seasoning" the barrel and is quite good for the leade in the chamber. You need to fire the dirtiest, cheapest steel cased commie surplus corrosive ammo you can find. This is also conducive to accuracy, the cheaper and dirtier the ammo, the better it shoots, everyone knows this.

Ok, now you need to neglect your kalashnikov, allow it to sit leaned up against the barrel without cleaning it, allow it to rust, don't oil it. Everyone knows Kalashnikov were designed to be neglected and never cared for, the more you take care of it, the less accurate it will be.

Finally, take a hammer to the front sight when trying to adjust it, DO NOT USE the correct tool for the job, I don't care if Tapco sells one for $9.95, use a hammer and beat on it.

I think Jessica has the hots for you, Gunplumber. Gonna email her so you can find love?

Anyway, I'd suggest you make sure you get plenty of thick grease, field strip the gun, grease up all the parts, then roll them in a sandbox. Reassemble the gun without cleaning it. Carefully inspect the barrel to make sure that there are plenty of particles of sand in it, then start carefully firing it, one shot at a time, by using a string attached to the trigger. After each shot, make sure you replace the sand.

Once you've gone through about 100 rounds like that, get an 8 gauge steel wire, and rapidly pull it back and forth along the bore of your gun.

Also, make sure that you NEVER take the time to properly aim, because this will have a deleterious effect upon your inaccuracy. Proper aiming is for professionals, not for AK owners.

And finally, make sure you take a ball peen hammer to the crown of your muzzle so that there is a small protrusion going into the bore of the barrel. This should ensure keyholing, which is a very desirable trait in an inaccurate rifle.

Good luck, and shoot curved!

Have the same issue and also bought mine in Anchorage AK in the 90s. Probably from Gary King or Pay and Save or somewhere like that. What I do is take mine up Denali Highway to Tangle Lakes and empty the mags into one of the lakes. Doesn t need to be accurate but is a lot of fun!!

i would have to say the ak/sks hands down. no matter if there is mud or water or anything. rack a round and that sob will shoot. unlike the m-16/ar-15 there prone to more jams. my romanian ak has never jammed on me that wasn't my fault. such as not loading the rounds right or having the tip not over the follower. my dpms panther has to be babied after 300 rounds.i have to clean the bolt and receiver out to clear out the build up of powder.
