It seems Romney is largely focusing on the very far right but shouldn't he be more focused on the moderates?

He is a Republican, what else would you expect.

Many pundents are saying that there are very few undecided voters, so who gets the most of the base out will be the winner. Obama plans a big election blitz to get out the vote. It may work but I don't think so. Romney has the advantage right now in voter enthusiasm. Obama is trying to get his base worked up too. That's what all the campaigning is about right now. There is nothing substantive in the Obama's campaign. The "war on women", the rich vs. poor, the tax return issue, etc. These have nothing to do with what most people think or want. But these things do play toward the base. Even Biden's stupid remark about Romney wanting "to put y'all back in chains" plays very well to the base.

I think in the end we will see that Romney will win exactly for the same reason that Bill Clinton won in 1992: It's the economy stupid!

He will need moderates and conservatives to turn up at the polls and vote for him. Romney is actually only slightly to the right of center. He just wants to make sure the conservatives that deserted John McCain and did not vote in the 2008 presidential election will vote this time because he will need their vote as well and moderates to be elected. I hear that polls taken this week show him up by 10% among Independents which includes many moderates. Many of his proposals are rather sensible and not particularly far right wing at all. The far right will probably vote Libertarian unless Romney can convince them to vote for him.

Right now he might be working on tying down the Republican base and then go after the moderates/independents after the conventions are over.

Most of those people don't start paying attention to the election till then anyway

Ask Ford, HW, Dole, and McCain if the GOP can win if the Christian right doesn't show up
