What to do about a cement sealed basement floor drain?

We bought a house where the previous owner filled in the basement floor drain with cement. We would like to finish this basement. Will a sump pump protect a finished basement from any flooding? Or do we need to reopen the drain?

you NEED to prevent water from entering the basement area.. call one of the basement waterproofers and get an estimate of what it would cost to prevent your basement from getting wet.. and yes, I would open the drain for a safety issue.. in case the water heater busted, or sudden flooding. It will ruin carpet, wallboard and such if if floods and it is finshhed,.

I would check with a water proofing company. I believe it usually isn't that much to have the space water proofed. It will be well worth the cost, as one flood could ruin all of your stuff. Hope this helps.
