No, he killed himself because he knew he was losing the war and the Russians were fast approaching and he did not want to be captured alive by them.
I did notice the 'pun' about the gas bill, not really in good taste when you consider how many people died needlessly in the gas chambers.

Yep... a classic joke created by Holocaust survivors when they arrived in the Displaced Person's camps after the war.
I learned it at a survivors' conference. I always thought it was funny. Though I've found even among Jews, it tends not to get a laugh. Personally I think it was very clever of the survivors, and impressive at how much they were able to bring up jokes & laughing, even at the incredible levels of pain they were in as they arrived...
