Why did Carter loose the 1980 election?

Allot of my republican freinds say it was the economy. I did some reading on it and he didn't start loosing until two weeks before the election ended. Did the economy get bad on the last couple of weeks? Or was there some other reason?

He was blamed for not resolving the hostage crisis in Tehran even though he eventually did negotiate their release. We also had high inflation during the 1970s after the OPEC oil embargo and long gas lines but we also had 10% interest on CD accounts. Wish we had some of that interest now.

That nonsense Cons are parroting from FOX "NEWS" is a lie. Ronald Reagan moved ahead of Carter in mid May 1980 and STAYED AHEAD all the way through till election day.

In the UK, in history we learn that he was unpopular because he was being to soft on the Russians, and Reagan (I think) who replaced promised to increase the defence budget hugely, make a cool anti-nuclear laser space gun and commission loads of new missiles and supersonic bombers.

We did not learn about the economy at that time, so it also may have been linked.

He was too soft, a time when the country felt they needed a leader, not a UN simpithyzer

Bad economy and he was white.
