after many years of alzheimers, my mother no longer knows me?

Go to see your mom often. Please don't abandon her because she no longer recognizes you. Make your visits all about her. Introduce yourself to her each time, present her with a small gift, like a single flower. Sit with her or take her for a walk but present yourself as a special someone who shows her kindness, friendship, and companionship. She may not know your name, but she will appreciate your love.

that is very sad but unfortunately it's just what happens with alzheimers... You can still go see her and bring her flowers and gifts to brighten up her day, and it may help you feel better as well.

That's what happens when the disease effects people. It's very sad :(

Spend time with her still though :)
