Parents dedicate their lives to their children. They make sacrifices and give up dreams so their children can have the best possible" lives. Parents live for their kids, not themselves.

may be I think, the greatest tragedy of the family is the lives of Parents, I mean they live but how? -they sacrifice for their children so much that here in this quote word-"unlived lives" is used for their lives.

I think it could mean that, because spouses usually have to make a choice between different candidates for marriage, after they are married, and after a series of down times in their marriage, they may feel regret for choosing the spouse they are married to and feel like they would have lived a better life if they had chosen a different candidate. Therefore, deciding upon that different candidate would be the unlived life that they could have lived and the regret that accompanies this would cause a tragic relationship that affects the well-being of the kids and the family.
