There various reasons why a thyroid may be failing. Some are transient and it's all simply a wait and see thing but other reasons can be an autoimmune reaction that is destroying your thyroid. The tests help in determining which is which and if your thyroid condition is too low then meds, thyroid hormones would be given. There's no substitution for thyroid hormones if the body can't produce them due to disease of the gland. If the manufacturing thyroid gland can't produce them then hormones have to be taken orally in pill form.
