Silicon diodes conduct electricity when the forward voltage is > 0.6 V. So the effect on say a sine wave that is > 0.6V is to clip it at 0.6V

A diode clipper usually consists of a regular diode is series with a fixed voltage source (like a zener diode). When it is driven by a voltage source and series resistor the peak output of the clipper will be limited to the fixed voltage plus a diode drop (about .7 volts). The minimum output will be the minimum output of the voltage source.
