How should I train for track?

I'm a 16 year old girl in 11th grade. Almost 5'9. Around 135 lbs. I just now finished cross-country season. My best time was 21:59. Last track season I ran 1 mile with a pb of 5:49 & a 1/2 mile in 2 forty something. I'm currently playing basketball & I would like to stay in shape for track. This year I'm thinking about running the mile, 1/2 mile, and 2 mile. How much should I run after practice considering I'm already doing running in practice? Should I lift weights for my legs? Should I do workouts for abs?

I would train for long distance first. Shoot for five miles to really be in shape. Then I would practice short sprinting. When you do like a 40 burst speed is the key to really make your legs stronger. This will help increase overall speed. Then when you run the mile, half mile etc. etc. should help your time.

I think you should do long easy run as a base for mileage. You don't really need to work on speed cause you can do that in basketball. Start of with 2-3 miles.
