How many years have to pass before a god becomes "mythical"?

When the Greeks had their gods, they were called "gods' and not "mythical gods" as they are referred to today. Since societies have replaced these gods with new ones (must have been new evidence uncovered), they now call the old gods "mythical." So how long will it take to call the modern day "gods", "mythical gods"?
Here's a typical Christian's thinking. "Yuk, yuk. Can you believe that those Greeks believed in such stupidity? If only Jesus had come out of the sky sooner"

Interesting question! I've thought the same thing! I think it's hard to say. The popular notion of what is now referred to as mythology lasted as a profound "religion" from about 700 B.C. up until romans convinced people about monotheism about 2 to 3 thousand years ago. so figure that lasted 7-8 hundred years. but with christianity, its been going for around 2000 years ago when it broke off from judaism. christianity has been around a while. however the percentage of atheists and agnostics has been steadily growing since the 50's when christianity peaked in america. if i had to guess i would say in 2 to 3 hundred years a different religion or lack thereof will take over. but obviously no one knows for sure.

It's more a matter of how many people take it seriously and get butt-hurt when you talk about it. Hindu gods have been around longer than Hebrew civilzation ever even existed, but there are still millions of Hindus. Greek pagans don't really exist much at all any more, so their religion is recognized as the fairy tale they all are simply because nobody gets butthurt and cries about discrimination when we laugh at Zeus' hijinks.

The Judeo/Christian god, YHWH, has records going back to Ur. Some of the earliest written records are of YHWH. Since that is around 5000 years, I don't think the 5-600 years of the Greek gods can really compare. Nice try though. Keep thinking and asking questions! :)

You will perish and your name with you. God will see to it.

People are like grasshoppers to God. If you don't want a relationship with him, he won't bother you.... so go about your pathetic life, but know that you will be held accountable for every arrogant word.

Do you think the one who made the ear doesn't hear?
