I've done that twice because I like to get different perspectives. But when I do I only get answers in one category and not the other. Does Yahoo Answers not allow the same post to show up twice or is it just a coincidence the other question never gets an answer?

Yes you can, but don't do them together as they will both post on the main page together. Space them an hour apart or longer.
All Yahoo say is not to post them excessively.
They will show up for those that work by category so they may work better in one than another.
Yahoo suggest you ask in the correct category and their suggestions are generally right, from my experience.

It is allowed as long as it is not done to excess. If you post the same question in 2 or 3 categories where it is appropriate, that's fine. If you post the same question in a dozen categories all at the same time, it could be a violation. It is only a coincidence that one got no answers.
