For what purpose?

If I'm collecting, the Python. If I'm choosing a gun for self-defense, the 1911... not because the 1911 or .45 ACP is a better choice, but because a Colt Python is a very finicky handgun. If I ever owned one, I'd get it tuned up, shoot it a few times, and then put it away except in very special circumstances. I don't want to have to pay to get it tuned up again.

If it was any other .357 Magnum, I'd choose that. S&W 686, Ruger GP-100, etc... Yeah, the .357 Mag would be my first choice.

Do you have a choice? What Colt 1911, new or old? If the Colt 1911 is new and the Python is in good condition, take the Python. You can get a Colt 1911 anytime, but you can't get a nice Python anytime. If the Colt 1911 is collectible, like a pre-war in nice condition, take the 1911.

I like the .45 due to it's nice recoil and low flash. The .357 used to wake the dead when I fired it. It also acted like a strobe light and gave away my position, and those around me. Night vision was worthless after firing it, unless you closed your eyes - which doesn't help aiming.

As always, I will take a revolver over a semi automatic any day. Less to go wrong. But, they are harder to fix in many cases, as they require more skill. The 1911 can take parts from any 1911, which makes it really nice to work on. It also loads faster, in most cases. There is less penetration, which means that you have less risk to hurting someone innocent. The Python is hard to find, which the 1911 is still pretty common. Since the 1980s, revolvers have been on the decline, so they can be hard to find parts for in a pinch.

However, having used both, I'm fine with either. I prefer a larger bore, but the power of the .357 more than makes up for this small issue. It was the best man-stopper going, prior to the .40 S&W.
