Chuck Norris jokes have been around for a long time but they really started gaining popularity when Conan O'Brien started showing clips of Walker Texas Ranger around 2006 and making comments about them.
When Norris himself bought into it that is when things exploded and the whole world was coming up with their own Chuck Norris Jokes. It reminds me of Redneck Jokes which happened in the same type of way.
