This question has been haunting me ever since I started watching cover videos of songs I love. I'm an aspiring musician and I've been thinking of ways to get myself out there, but I would like to know how these artists make money, or if they do at all. (I feel like they do). Help me out here?

"If you are performing a song that does not belong to you, you may not be able to monetize it unless you have explicit written permission from the rights owner of the song."
-it's written in monetization FAQ page -http://support.google.com/youtube/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=2490020
That means you have to get permission from the owner.
Behind Blue Eyes by the Who is an amazing song! But Limp Bizkit destroyed it. The Nirvana version of The Man Who Sold the Word, originally by David Bowie, is terrible. The Guns n Roses version of Knockin' on Heavens Door, originally by Bob Dylan, sucks. There are a lot more that I just can't think of right now. :D
