How to decide the location of columns while designing a building?

I am pursuing my civil engineering. I am quite confused on the above discussed question. How do we decide where a column should be placed, their numbers in a structure. Early responses will be appreciated. Thanks

There are multiple factors in that decision.
Most have to do with the required strength/depth/mass of the floor slab/beams
required to span the distance under the expected floor loading.
There are considerations in the total stiffness in the structural frame as well.

columns are usually 30' apart due to earthquake loading. any column spacing more than 30' is likely to collapse due to an earthquake.

u might space the column larger than 30', but u have to strength the structure accordingly.

It depend son the size of the building, the materials being used, the weight, the type of ground you are constructing on, how high or low the building will be, etc.
