What is the logic behind cheating on someone?

I just don't get it. Why do people cheat? Why can't you just break up with someone, and then get with that other person? Haha. There should never be an excuse.

1) I want to make sure the sex is good before ending one relationship for another
2) I want to hurt the person I am with because they have hurt me
