Can you make a new tree from a large branch?

Question

I have no idea what I am doing, but this is what happened today:
-I found a nice, mature Japanese Maple
-Cut off an entire bottom branch that was about 4 feet long
-Soaked the cut end in water for about 30 minutes
-Dipped in rooting hormone powder
-Planted 3-4 inches deep in wet organic potting soil with cage to support the branch
-Watered thoroughly

The goal is to grow roots and eventually make this into my first bonsai project.  It is protected from direct sunlight, but I'm not sure if that is necessary.  I'm in Oregon and it is in the 70's and low 80's this week.  Will this branch grow into a tree?

you have to use softwood cuttings
not the hard brown woddy part.
the cut should be 6-8" in length

best results July.(northen hemisphere)
Wound "cut", apply high IBA (10,000ppm)
stick using 1peat:3 pearlite under mist or spray bottle.
be patient usually  takes 6-8 weeks to root
when rooted the cutting should be allowed to go through
a dormant period (winter) before transplanting.

Sorry that you have wasted your time. Next time try a very small twig. You can grow some hedges by sticking offcuts directly into the soil (like Box) but it depends on the plant and the time of year. You will have more success in Spring.

No it won't, only certain plants could possibly be able to do that, not this one...
