When Mitchell lost his wife things turned for the worst. The good archaic custom of socially drinking have become ephemeral in Mitchell's world. He no longer sees the joy in his everyday life and has allowed his wife's death to drain him emotionally. Although her death has impacted Mitchell's life, it is not the source of his bane. It is the depravity of his alcoholism that is causing the disparity in his life.
