What to say to my friend?

I just made a new friend and he is very nice and seems happy. But someone I know said they have talked him out of suicide a couple of times before and I cant help but notice he has self harm scars all over his legs and arms. We arent very close yet but it looks like he has been through a lot but he seems so happy whenever I see him. If he shows me his scars or comes to me one day and is feeling depressed what do I say? I usually just pretend I dont notice his scars because it would be rude to ask.

I think the best thing you can do is tell him that you're there for him, tell him that it's okay for him to talk to you about these things. You should also just let him do the talking and LISTEN; show him that you really care. Obviously, I don't know what he's been through, so I can't tell you what to tell him if he does tell you his story, but just comfort him, tell him it's in the past and that he has you if he ever needs any help or advice for that matter.(: He'll get through whatever he's going through with your help and the help of his family and good friends!
