i don't like it! giving them a driver license is like telling them..."welcome to america." they say they're giving them license to get back and forth to work. that's like saying saying "it's ok to work here illegally." i wonder sometime..."are the street signs (stop, no right turn, etc) going to be put in spanish which will slow traffic down?"

my question about this is...if they do a moving violation are they REQUIRED to pay for the ticket? if they don't pay for it, they don't pay taxes for the state to say "we'll take it out of their tax return", and if they take their license they don't care cause they didn't have them from the beginning.

With the exception of Arizona and a handful of states way up north who have no sizeable population of illegal aliens, every state does this. California is actually pretty late in the game.

The idea behind this is to have drivers on the road who have insurance so that if YOU or I get hit by somebody, we don't have to pay for the damage out of OUR own pocket. So it's more about having insurance than having a license.

These licenses are marked, so that everyone looking at them basically knows the person has no immigration status in the United States. I had a Florida Driver License as a tourist back in 1981, and nothing bad happened.

Yes, California has followed the lead of Utah, Washington, Oregon, Nevada, Colorado, Illinois, and New Mexico in not making lawful residence a requirement for a driver's license. That may also soon be the law in Minnesota, Vermont, Rhode Island, and Maryland. I feel like this will mean that there will be fewer drivers on the road who have not demonstrated their ability to drive, that there will be more drivers on the road who have insurance should they be involved in an accident, and there is a possibility that with a higher percentage of insured drivers my uninsured motorist coverage will be less expensive.

All in all, a good deal for me. I simply do not understand those who are so mad at "illegal aliens" that they would choose to make their OWN driving more dangerous and expensive. The phrase "cut off your nose to spite your face" comes to mind.

It is also amusing that people seem to think this is a procedure unique to California, and use it as part of their senseless California bashing.

California is wrong to allow illegals to drive legally.

I think Cal. should break away and become their own independent country. Then we can supply them with arms and they can kill each other.
