Car shut off abruptly?

While leaving my college class I turned my car on to hear it struggling to stay on, basically running but chugging along as if it was at 500 rpms or so. I revved the engine and the car made a tinging noise like someone dropped a metal wrench in there and it was bouncing around. I attempted to drive home so I could do research and go get replacement parts but it started losing speed while still "accelerating" then just shut off. The engine didn't sieze because it will attempt to turn over but just a bunch of smoke pours out. If anyone has a solution that would be wonderful, I had a tow truck bring me home and I need to fix it as soon as possible.

If you heard some bad noise coming from the engine that cant be anything good . Sorry to say . Sounds like it ran out of oil . Check your dip stick and see if you had any oil in it . And if you due have oil make sure it doesn't look like coffee. If it does then it was your head gasket. You will have to tow it back to a shop . Sorry man sucks

I had an engine do like that and when I pulled off the oil pan I found a loose connecting rod. The bearings had to be replaced and the crankshaft needed to be ground and connecting rods reconditioned to fit. I pulled the engine, stripped it and took that to a speed shop to be machined into good condition. I assembled it with all new seals and bearings and gaskets. If you're lucky tou can do that too.

That's not the only thing that can make an engine do like yours though. Maybe your cambelt slipped.

Sounds like a piston rod broke... You need a mechanic to take the engine apart to find out the extent of the damage. That is of course you really want it fixed. Might be time to look for a car to buy.
