Do you think as a society we are subjected to a tyranny of the underclass?

Important - I am not making a point on class warfare here.

"underclass" is typically used to refer to people who opt out of society and use criminal means to survive, this can occur at any level of wealth so they cannot really be measured in such a way.

Technically speaking, a corrupt but massively influential politician could be considered a member of the underclass, were his misdemeanors be made public.

crime comes from greed, opportunity, oppression, and/or mental instability.  If the country actually took care of all of its citizens, crime would be much lower and society would be much better in all aspects.  So the tyranny that people may feel from it, is the fault of many decades of neglect by all members of society.

I've never heard of anything remotely resembling your definition of "underclass."   Rather, I think that the people you have described (sociopaths?)  may tyrannize the lower classes, but they don't tyrannize me.

Nope. Most criminals aren't interested in imposing a tyranny; they just want to do what they want to do & avoid the consequences for it.
