You conceited jerk! You made them live quiet, unassuming lives that didn't amount to anything, and it has made them ghosts of what they COULD have been!!
Basically he is bashing the other person for not letting the people they are talking about actually live lives that could have been amazing. It's a pretty amazing quote and policy after which we should all try to live and raise our children. Raise them as if they are destined for greatness - and if they achieve it, then, GREAT! If not, then we at least tried. If we don't push them toward greatness, they will be doomed to live lives of mediocrity and it will all be our fault!
